Divorce Present

When my parents announced that they were going to get a divorce they sat us down at the dinner table one evening and laid out the facts.

I was 10 and lost it.

In an effort to calm their sobbing pre-teen, they made an offer to get my anything I wanted. What would make me feel better? Anything kid. Please. Stop. Crying!

And, the first thing that came to my 10 year old mind? White Cake. A cheap Jiffy box white cake...that's all I wanted.

My parents were thinking along the lines of maybe a bike and it took them more than a second to regroup and figure out if they had a white cake box mix in the house.

We didn't.

Initially they asked if another kind of cake would work and before I could answer they saw that this was reasonably fixable, so into the van we piled and over to the local market we went. Leaving with one box of white cake mix in hand.

Since then it's become this joke..every birthday, wedding shower, bridal shower, significant event--there it's been, white cake.

We've been through a lot together, me and that cake. And, she's been good to me.

  1. Sounds like a fantasticly yummy inside-joke! Nice to be able to lighten up such a tough topic, especially for a 10 year old.

  2. Yeah, it was sob sob sob "white" sob sob sob "cake". One of the many things is life that isn't so funny when it's happening, but lots of laughs about it afterward.

  4. @ Michelle: So funny. As an adult it isn't actually my favorite. I think it's the only thing I could think of then. But, I love the nostalgia of it.

  5. Hilarious & sad. Like you said looking back you can laugh about it. But I can only imagine how sad you must have been & the oddness of going to the store. --Julia

  6. @ Julia: It's amazing to me that I could describe every detail of the room at that moment. I think if I thought hard enough I could tell you what they were wearing.
