Review (Idiot's Guide to Raising Boys)

"This book delivers the readers to a respectful, gender-aware world where our sons are treasured along with their equally wonderful sisters." --Laurie & Barron Helgoe

The Idiot's Guide to Raising Boys by Laurie and Barron Helgoe is really like an encyclopedia  for parents of boys. This book covers everything from circumcision and bed wetting to dating and college.

The authors suggest reading the book once from start to finish and then checking back in on specific chapters as your son grows and changes. I loved the references early in the book likening boys to Billy from The Family Circus cartoons who took the longest possible way from here to there so he could experience a little bit of everything . That is completely my son now. Who knows where all the exploring will take him in life?

I also loved the dating section of this book and how it talks about how we as parents are from the "Mars v. Venus" generation. Now, no child wants to be handed the book, but they make great points about showing your son how women communicate differently by using ourselves (mothers) as examples. Ex. "Mom doesn't feel so well. And yes I could do "x, y, z", but often as a woman I just want you to hear me out."

I think this is a great resource to have on hand and will make a handy reference guide for each transition we experience as parents to an amazingly curious son.

  1. Ooh, good one! I think making sure he has an outlet for all that energy has been our biggest challenge so far in raising a boy!

  2. My parents got the college search JUST RIGHT. They were very up-front about what they could help me with financially and which schools would become options if I got a scholarship (I did). They were also wonderfully supportive when their only child declared she was going to be a theatre major!

  4. I think the greatest reward with boys from a mom's perspective is they are momma's boys. Boys tend to always love and respect their mom's and have a super special bond with them. The most challenging part, I think will be when they begin to date. ~ Alisyne

  7. I think my parents got a lot right, but one thing in particular was raising us to be financially sound. They made it possible for us to not start out in debt and taught us about budgets and how to live within our means and of course to always use a coupon :o) - very important things. ~ Alisyne

  8. Oooh, I could use this one too!!

I think my parents got the whole consistency thing right -- especially with discipline. I could never play one side against the other! (Much to my dismay).

Hardest thing about raising a boy... Hmm, not sure! But God help Mike and I if Gabe is into sports. We're sort of "indoor kids" when it comes to that.

    Also, Liking and Subscribing. :)
